Sonakshi Sinha’s Noor and Raveena Tandon’s Maatr off to a disappointing start at the box office
Sonakshi Sinha’s Noor and Raveena Tandon‘s Maatr have hit the screens today, but looks like both the films are off to a disappointing start. Though they looked interesting on paper, the movies haven’t been able to pull the audience into the theatres. Our trade sources reveal that while Noor has opened to an occupancy of 20-30 per cent across India, Maatr had an average occupancy of 10-15 per cent till the afternoon shows. Though we expect the films to pick up by evening, Maatr and Noor should have opened to better numbers, according to us.
These low numbers may have been triggered due to the mixed reviews that both Noor and Maatr have received from the critics. However, with people across India praising the performances delivered by Sonakshi and Raveena, we expect the films to grow. If the word-of-mouth publicity develops further over the weekend, Maatr and Noor will be able to post decent numbers at the box office. However, we will have to wait and watch. Trade expert, Akshaye Rathi (exhibitor and distributor), had revealed to us that both the films were niche releases. He mentioned how Noor would release in about 1000 screens, while Maatr will be released in 500 odd screens. With such a limited release, our trade expert predicted, “The COP (cost of production) of each of the movies should be to the tune of Rs 10 crore. They are releasing in limited screens, so considering that Maatr releases in 500 odd screens and earns Rs 6-7 crore over the first weekend, it is relatively okay. Noor, on the other hand, should rake in around about Rs 9-10 crore over the first weekend, which is really good. They are very reasonably priced films, releasing in limited screens, so that’s how it is supposed to be.” (ALSO READ – Maatr movie review: Raveena Tandon’s hard-hitting performance makes this revenge thriller watchable)
The makers might be able to recover 3/4th of their budget over the weekend courtesy the low budgets, however it all depends on how the film grows over the first three days. Anyway, which film are you seeing this weekend? Share with us your choice in the comments section below!
